An often controversial topic is whether to somehow reward employees for their 5S efforts. Personally, I think it can add a little more fun to the program so why not. What do you think?

Most companies gloss over the third pillar of a 5S initiative; Shine. They just figure all they need to do is clean up the place. Maybe scrub the equipment, wash the floor, wipe down tables etc. While this is certainly part of the initial Shine step, it's by no means the last. What's critical is to set up a standardized process for keeping that equipment clean and operating properly. To do so, follow these steps;

When I first began learning about 5S nearly a decade ago we were so eager to begin. I was managing a warehouse at a well known medical device company at the time. We were glad to find #5S Color Visual Standards in place at a recent client visit. Regrettably, this is rare. Often, 5S leaders neglect this crucial standardizing practice.
