5S ROI - can you measure it?

Started this discussion. Last reply by David Visco Jul 31, 2015. 7 Replies

Like it or not, many senior managers look to the bottom line with regards to any new project. While 5S should never be considered a project we all know it's easily considered as such. With that in…Continue

Which 5S Audit scoring format do you use?

Started this discussion. Last reply by David Visco May 28, 2015. 7 Replies

Over the years I've found most 5S Audit forms require the auditor to score the measure between a 1 and a 5. One is poor and 5 is outstanding. The problem with this method is is allows for some…Continue

5S audit improvement example

A 5S Champion for a large tire manufacturer you would certainly know reached out to me asking for some advice. They have a 1 million square foot manufacturing facility. They've broken the area down into over 150 zones. Each zone has to go through a robust 5S certification process which takes several months. Imagine the effort that went into certifying the entire plant?!. Unfortunately, their 5S process has slipped quite a bit over the past year. as manpower for the 5S support team was cut. A…See More

color coding for gas cylinders

Saw these colored rings to go around gas cylinders to signify the gas type. What was missing from the area however was a matrix defining the colors. Overall, the idea was promising just needing a little tweaking.

5S for color blind people

During a recent seminar I conducted for AME on "How to Sustain 5S" I was asked "how do you handle using colored visual controls and standards for color blind employees?" What an interesting question. One audience member suggested that was one of the reasons OSHA incorporated striping for hazards. While this makes sense, it doesn't really address the non-hazard color coding companies use for standardizing lanes, zones, WIP, etc. Any thoughts on this? Has your company had to address this…See More

Useful TRICK to help YOU stay focused on what you're trying to improve upon

Here’s a quick trick to stay focused on an area you’re looking to improve.  Let’s say you’re interested in improving the sustainability of your 5S process. One way to do this is to go the gemba (where the work is done) and find something done right. For example, maybe during your walk you find a tool placed properly on a shadow board or you see someone from your team replacing some worn out floor tape. It can be any improvement. The challenge however is that we all get caught up in other duties…See More

7 5S Management Musts to Sustainment - Part 4

The fourth management MUST to sustain 5S is for them to Support 5S. As a recap, the first three MUSTS are:1. Get on the floor - go to gemba2. Go through 5S training3. Be a part of the 5S TeamToday, I'll talk about the fourth 5S Management Must which is to Support 5S. What do I mean by support? It's really quite simple. Managers must give their staff the time and materials to follow through with 5S activities. Let's look at these individually:Time: if I've heard it once, I've heard it a thousand…See More

Love the bin. Any suggestions on how to convince our Executive Sponsor they want to put out funds to reduce waste associated with counting. We are not much on tracking soft dollars. If you have done a project (or know of anyone that has done a similar project) and can share some great outcome measures with cost savings that would be great.

Great. I am looking for some visual management examples for our OR supply cores and central supply. We have alot of waste in our current processes. Our materials staff literaly counts everything everyday. And as we both know a count is only as good as the moment you count. I am thinking double bin, fill lines etc.... We use Kanban cards in our OR suites as restock points mid way through the supply. Im not sure how to apply this same principle in a larger compartment or bin. Any thoughts?
