Phase 5 - Sustain

Shitsuke (躾) Sustaining the discipline: Refers to maintaining and reviewing standards. Once the previous 4S's have been established, they become the new way to operate. Do not allow a gradual decline back to the old ways of operating.

Hi David

Thanks for your input - I agree with what you are saying

To help people know what they are being held accountable for - I am creating templates that show pictures of poor conditions and good conditions - and the key areas to check and methods for cleaning etc

If am interested if anyone has taken a similar approach or has seen templates that support this approach

Hi Helen,

Thanks for the input. I've found that two key tips for sustaining any improvement process such as 5S is 1) Get management involved 2) Hold people accountable.

1) Getting management involved - in other words, managers need to go the Gemba weekly and point out to folks the improvements they see as well as areas of improvement still needed with regards to 5S. Show the folks they care.

2) Hold people accountable - it's critically important that supervisors, group leads, etc hold their staff accountable for following the standards that have been set in place. The example I give often when training on this concept is a Warehouse Supervisor. If he sees one of his people put a pallet jack in an area outside of the taped off area that was previously agreed to it's up to that Warehouse Supervisor to call out the non-conformance to that person - in a tactful way of course. If however, the Warehouse Supervisor simply walks by and lets acts like that continue, he's lost the battle.

Hopefully this is helpful. Feel free to reach out with additional questions.

5S Best Practices

I am interested in examples of techniques used to effectively sustain - there are the usual audit checklists, however they do not drive local ownership. I am looking at creating templates showing what good looks like and the actions that are needed to sustain this condition - I cannot find examples of what I am looking for online  - so I am developing something just now

What is the best sustainability system you have witnessed?

Certainly Sustainment is the most challenging part of any 5S program. Does anyone have any great success stories?
